Man on a mission

These last two years have posed different challenges for many people and conversations about the importance of caring for our mental, as well as our physical, health have become more prevalent. At Incom-CNS, supporting the mental health of our team has been paramount during the pandemic so we wanted to take the time to share a good news story about the achievements of one of our team.

Sales manager, John McNamara, has been on a personal journey to transform his physical and mental health during the last three years and earlier this month he was recognised for his fantastic success so far. In November 2018, John was at what he describes as ‘a low point’ in his life. He weighed 130kg and was suffering with low self-esteem. He knew he needed to make some life changes to improve his physical and mental health so he joined Men’s Hub – Team Training, in Preston, along with a six-a-side, weight loss football league called MAN v FAT Football.

MAN v FAT Football is an award-winning weight loss programme designed to create a friendly and welcoming community exclusively for men across the UK wanting to lose weight. Players can score goals both on the pitch and off the pitch, as weight loss progress directly impacts your team’s performance. Officially endorsed by the FA, and backed by Sport England, this unique football league has enabled thousands of players to lose weight and get fitter, collectively helping men lose over 364,333.85 LB (that’s the same weight as The Statue of Liberty!) and counting.

When John joined in November 2018, the league was in its infancy and only midway through the first season. There is 6 teams in the League: John’s team – FC Phats & Small (The Blues), River Plate of Chips (The Blacks), FC Porky Blinders (The Reds), Chunky Canaries (The Yellows), Real Madras (The Oranges), Portly Vale (The Whites).

At November 2021’s Season 8 Presentation Evening, John’s team collected the Overall League Winners Award for the 4th time (bearing in mind 2 Seasons were lost to Covid) and also won the On the Pitch League – the total of the on the pitch score and the off the pitch weight loss. Of the nine players in the team, FC Phats & Small, eight are still the original line up.

John himself was also the League Top Scorer for his incredible success off the pitch, losing weight 13 weeks out of the 14 week season (the one missing week was actually when he was absent for an Incom team night out…sorry John!) To date, John has lost an impressive 26.6kg (just over 4 stone) over the last 3 years weighing in now at 103.4kg.

“With my fitness now massively improved, my life has completely changed,” John states.

The team play every Thursday night and John personally trains 3 days every week  on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday getting down to The Men’s Hub bright and early for 5.30am until 6.15am. Wow!

The Men’s Hub is a community gym which started in Preston and has now grown to 8 locations across the UK, it’s a team format with between 12-16 people on each session lasting 45 minutes focusing on either strength training, cardio or core work with every day being different.

“Am I finished?” John sounds incredulous at our question. “No! We have started an 11-a-side team from everyone at the MAN v FAT Football league, called MAN v FAT Preston FC.

“I have more weight to lose and I want to be fitter and healthier so I can continue to enjoy life and will continue to keep pushing myself”

Incom-CNS believes in the power of teamwork and are proud to support John and his team in their fitness goals, sponsoring the squad’s football kits and supporting John every step of the way on this transformative mental health and wellbeing journey.
